Spatial Design Studio: Initiation (Part 1)

Design Brief: Explore a personal initiation and represent this through a medium of choice. The objects used should narrate the process of initiation. Models, drawings, installations, performance, film.

Extract from Design Report:

In the installation I wanted to depict two people coming together through their shared experiences and shared connections. The black and white threads were selected essentially to differentiate each person. The lines of thread were to represent experiences. Initially personA and personB lead independent lives unaware of each other. At a point they started to experience similar things, though still independently. These moments are shown where their lines are running parallel to each other but not touching. At a point in their lives they were introduced and followed a series of interactions getting to know each other more intimately. This is where the threads start crossing and touching and twisting with each other. On their wedding day we see a great amount of connectivity. After this union they continue their lives with significantly more interaction with each other but also time apart. Their lives are intertwined, but they will have unique experiences that are not necessarily shared.

The white and black sets of threads were suspended within a box. From this I wanted to portray the invisible forces of the four elements and spirits (as called upon in the sacred circle) that support each of them.

‘Wicca engages its followers in both physically and mentally creating sacred spaces; spaces which are neither bounded by territorial fences, nor dependent on geographical locations.’ (Hume, 1998, p. 312)

In creating the installation the physical nature of support or lack thereof was a key element. As more threads were added, their location was dependant on the placement of earlier threads. This is similar to how the experience of current moments is dependent on past experiences. Also our ability to do new things may be (perceived to be) dependant on the support of another person.
