Spatial Design Studio: The Fold

Design Brief:

Examine, analyse, interpret and inhabit the ‘fold’ through a series of experimental physical modelling processes that will allow you explore its spatial complexities.

Week 1: 24 exploratory models using non-primitive geometries and organic shapes, curves and folds.

Week 2: select one of the 24 models and enlarge and extend it. Use laser cutter to cut card for assembly.

Week 3: Combine model with a partner and sectional cut

Week 4: Design interiors with fittings and furnishings for the models to act as an inhabitable space.

Week 2: laser cut version of Week 1 model (with ‘enhancements’)

The size was doubled for the laser cut version.

Week 3: Combined models with sectional cut

New versions of each model were built and combined, then sawed in half for a sectional view.

A representational view of the ‘house’ in a desolate environment.
